I woke up early. It was hard for me to sleep. Alexis was snoring softly beside me. Her soft sleeping face looks so very peaceful, and I envy her. In the crisis we’re in currently, a sweet dream is out of the question for me. Hello, nightmares.
The little cave thing we’re hiding in is more like a hastily dug hole in the ground, to be honest. The entrance is blocked and disguised by several fallen branches covered with leaves and a few small boulders that are quite easy to push out from the inside but hard to remove from the outside. A little sunlight pours in naturally from the other side of our cave: a small serene beach surrounded by steep rocky cliffs.
The water is pristine and clear; the sand is soft and warm. Utmost privacy. If only we had food and clean water to drink, living out here wouldn’t be too bad.
From our bags we’ve found two packets of beef jerky, a package of instant noodles, two bags of Milano cookies, several packs of gum and a box of Tic Tacs. That’s all the food we have for now. And there’s also four small bottles of water I’ve found. I grab one and take a sip.
Refreshed, I rouse Alexis from her sleep.
“What? Did she find us?” she instantly asks. Rubbing her eyes, she yawns.
“No, thankfully. I have no idea where she is,” I tell her quietly.
“Neither do I,” she says, her voice also hushed.
We sit in silence for a few minutes, wondering what we should do. Then I go out onto the beach and lug back two large oversized palm leaves back into the cave.
“Temporary beds,” I explain as Alexis tilts her head in question. She nods slowly and rummages through our bags. In hers she finds a few tissues. In mine she finds several packages of travel napkins, the soft Kleenex kind. She tears them open and lays them down over the leaves. I smile in appreciation.
I offer her some water and a chocolate-chip cookie. She takes it gratefully and I nibble on another one, although mine’s iced sugar, no chocolate. I gulp down some more water myself and sit on one of the makeshift beds.
Suddenly, we hear the rustling of leaves outside our cave.
I stifle a scream and Alexis’ eyes grow wide.
A menacing brown eye stares at us from a little hole in the barrier of the entrance.
Finished, finally! Thanks for reading, hope to have some more drama in future chapters!
